Catalog Description: A small eight-day marine chronometer made by Waltham. c.1909-1930's A small eight-day marine chronometer ( ship's clock ) made by Waltham. The movement has 15 jewels and is adjusted for six positions and temperature. For many years the American Navy and Merchant Marine used English and European chronometers but the arms race in Naval Forces that preceded WW1 produced a shortage of chronometers and led to America making their own. This model was in production from 1909 to the 1930's. This clock comes with its original rating card which shows that it was run on test for four months before being issued and over that time had a mean accuracy of +0.32 seconds a day. The teak case has been cleaned and re-polished. |
