Catalog Description: Austrian Gilt Wood Table Clock of Neoclassical Design, c. 1820 This clock has an exquisite movement which is handmade. It is 8-days duration and strikes on a bell with a lovely tone. The movement design is unusual and of very high quality. It is fitted with a rack striking mechanism of a type similar to Vienna Wall regulators and has static spring barrels. Every piece of the movement shows a fine hand finish - the marking out for the wheels is visible etc. French movements of this age would be count-wheel strike and have rotating barrels) The case is Gesso (wood coated with plaster and then gilded) and the gilding has mellowed to show the red undercoat in places giving the piece a satisfying patina. The dial is enamelled copper and the bezel is cast brass fitted with convex glass. The movement back plate is engraved No. 6 in copper plate hand writing but apart from that there is no mark. The design of the movement however shows that this clock is Austrian. Additional keywords: mantel, mantle |
