Birge and Ives

Catalog Description:

Birge and Ives Triple Decker Mantel Clock, circa 1832 Mahogany case with carved hard wood columns and splat; wood dial with gold gesso on the spandrels and mirror ellipse opening in the upper quadrant of the dial; strap brass movement; cast iron weights. The strap brass movement is typical of Ives work. The movement operates well and strikes perfectly on the hours. It is an eight day clock with the original pendulum bob and crank as well as the original dial mirror with it's wire lift that runs up through the top of the clock and can be used to raise the mirror to view the works inside the clock. 36" tall x 17" wide. Condition: excellent, with minor touch up on reverse painting (eglomise) in lower door glass. Dealer comments: Birge and Ives were only together in business as far as our research can determine from 1832 to 1833. Mr. Birge seemed to acquire partners pretty freely...he was in business with Mr. Peck and Mr. Fuller and several others through the years. This particular duo-Birge and Ives is a wonderful find and the label inside the clock (see photo) is outstanding-MINT!
