Catalog Description: C.1820, An American tall clock, now with the name of David Wood on the painted dial. This clock came from a home in Plaistow, NH, where it had been given as a Christmas gift in 1972. (card inside) The clock had actually been in the same Haverhill family (Cogswell) since around 1900, but had been left to Anthony Cogswell"s sister and he purchased it from her in 1972 for his wife Ruth. The mahogany case has had restoration over the years: a Queen Anne style base with bracket feet (well over 100 years old), the front door was lost and replaced with another old one (darker than main case) with carved diamond molding, so there are extra hinge cutouts and extra holes on the left side of the opening, and the clock took a tumble and the top door shows evidence of repair. When the case work was done, a dark mahogany panel and diamond molding were added to the base plinth. Some veneer chips will still need attention. The quality 8-day, rolling moon movement has large hemispherical cutouts at the bottom of both plates, and shows a lot of pivot wear, having been run without service. When the clock took a tumble, the seat board broke and was replaced, and one dial foot pulled loose in the dial, so a wound shows from the front. Although it has under-gone reworking in its" nearly 2 century life, it is still a good New England clock. Height 92' Additional keywords: longcase, tallcase, grandfather |
