Catalog Description: C.1840, Austrian 5-Glass mantel regulator, with date and moon phase, and with a repeat button on the left side of the case. This is a very interesting and well made clock, with fusee for the time and a large going barrel for the strike; the wheels are all nicely spoked and the snail is skeletonized. It appears, with a quick count, to run for a week and this is unusual for Austrian mantel clocks of this period (winds from the rear). The brass case is fire-gilt, the base with a mock brick motif, and with 4 little pineapple finials at top. The platform and lever are hand made, commensurate with this period, with an "English flavor" to the construction. One would not expect such heavy beveled glass for the time period, but we see no evidence of it being changed and we have seen early weight movements, encased in heavy beveled glass similar to this. The moon dial has a single hairline across the center. In the end, an uncommon and desirable Austrian clock; Height 13" $10000-12000 |
