Jeremias Metsker

Catalog Description:

C.1840, Austrian, a 19th Century reproduction of the famous astronomical clock made by Jeremias Metsker in 1570 (and now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna). The original is often called a "Turmchenuhren", and the original case was of gilded copper, while these repros are gilded spelter with brass and steel hands. This clock has a simple 30 hour movement and the planetarial dials are purely for decoration. Has been mounted to a wooden base so that it could be shaded with a glazed cover (now absent). The hands are poorly replaced, and a couple pieces of molded case trim are missing; clock does run. Clock only 11.75', with base 14'
