Unsigned Steam Hammer

Catalog Description:

C.1885, French, Industrial "Steam Hammer" in very good condition. This clock has been in storage and may need some cleaning, however, it is complete and sound, no chips in marble, etc. This steam hammer and the lighthouse (lot 239) were the most popular models produced. The steam hammer is pleasing in that the up and down motion of the hammer striking the anvil continues for the full running duration of the clock. To quote from Derek Roberts' book: Mystery Novelty and Fantasy Clocks, (1999), page 260, "The hammer forms part of a complex pendulum ae..someone would put the metal to be treated below the hammer and on his signal a man in the gallery would depress the lever (showing left) , releasing the steam and actuating the hammer." Note F/Slow corrections are made by turning a nut under the central steam cap. With original movement signed Guilmet. Very good example. Height 18" Reserve: $2700
