France Shelf Figural Mystery Swinging Arm

Catalog Description:

C.1890, French, Large Conical Pendulum clock, as-found. This is a large and impressive clock. The case has one shortcoming, in that the transition molding got damaged and the owner had a cabinet maker create a new molding out of wood. So the quarter molding going "round the clock about 3" above the bottom is made of wood, painted black. This is the first time we have seen this particular male statue on any of the French mystery/novelty clocks, yet he is for sure original to the base and has always held this pendulum; note his grape leaf crown and cloth that flows from shoulder to loin. The movement is large and robust, strikes fine, but has come loose from the dial plate and needs a couple of pins (minor); would benefit from service. This is one of several foreign clocks consigned by the de-accession committee of the American Clock and Watch Museum in Bristol, and it is offered, just to spur interest, without reserve or minimum bid. Height 38" -0-
