Catalog Description: C.1890, French, the "Forgeman" Time and Strike mystery clock, from the French Industry series. This is a nice original example with old patina. Through a complex series of linkage, the oscillating movement of the crutch is converted into the up and down movement of the hammer forge, but amazingly the forge stands 6 inches to the right of the clock, and separate from it. The forgeman is seen holding his iron piece on the anvil while the hammer makes impact. The clock is inset in a "brick" firebox and boiler, and appear to be sending steam impulses to the large steam cylinder and forge to the right. A "sister" to this clock may be seen in A Collector's Guide to Clocks, by Derek Roberts (1992), page 103, and also in our Nov'99 catalog, lot 362, which sold for $9000 + premium. Height 16" Reserve $9000 |
