Catalog Description: C.1900, French, Industrial Series "Bell" clock, with a small 8-day gong striking, lever escapement movement (Japy Freres) contained within the heavy cast bell (and with replacement Swiss platform). The bell was originally silvered and most of the silver was polished away by a dutiful maid. Below the dial is engraved the phrase: VAE.MIHI.SI.NON.-EVANGELISAVERO. The bell is supported on an oak yoke across two substantial brass uprights, the whole mounted to a red marble base with a gilt bronze footing. These clocks were retailed by Cartier. See sister to this clock in Sotheby's New York catalog, dated June 28, 1993 (Meraux Collection), lot 48, which sold for $1610, and also in Derek Roberts' book: Mystery Novelty and Fantasy Clocks, (1999), page 260. The 3" silvered dial with wear; Height 14" Reserve $1150 |
