Catalog Description: C.1960, English, Rolling Ball Clock, with a glazed cover. This is one of the largest rolling balls we have seen. But more important it is the running-est ball clock we've ever come across. As long as it is wound and the ball is on the table it wants to keep running. Anyone who has struggled to keep one running will appreciate that aspect. This has a very large "table" with 150 inches of groove, taking 30 seconds +/- for the ball to travel from one end to the other. The maker fashioned a strong base with leveling screws at each corner, and covered with purple velvet. Although not an antique, this will certainly please anyone with an interest in mechanical curiosities. Englishman, Wm. Congreve is credited with making the first rolling ball clock. Width of base 22", Height 19" $4000-4500 |
