Catalog Description: French gilded spelter figural clock, c.1900 "Putto" or Cherub Statue Clock; brass inside movement, unsigned; bevelled glass door; 21 inches tall by 10 inches across the base; Condition: Excellent. Additional dealer Comments: The gilding (gold) plated spelter (metal) on the statue and base retains most of its shine and sparkle. There is evidence of aging on the gilding of course, given the fact that it is over 100 years old. However, the bright, glistening gold finish on this clock catches your eye all the way across the room. And, being gold, it won't tarnish either-no laborious polishing on this one! There are no repairs on the case or statue and the "Putto" retains his wings and quiver of arrows.(By the way, "Putto" is an art term from the Italian meaning a small child-usually with wings... sometimes called a Cherub. The plural is "Putti". Somebody took GREAT care of this beauty. The clockwork has been recently cleaned and adjusted for perfect operation. Fortunately, it has a recently replaced platform escapement (which won't mean much to anyone except clock collectors), but that translates to the fact that the clock should continue to operate perfectly for decades to come-and you don't have to worry about displaying the clock on a level surface since this type movement runs fine anywhere it is displayed!!! There is a teenie, tiny chip inside the bevelled glass in the door...but it's so small, and hidden by the door bezel. The clock quietly sounds a small bell-once on the half-hour and then the correct number of strikes on each hour. |
