Germany Longcase

Catalog Description:

German - American 30-hour Longcase Clock A c. 1780 movement and c.1810 soft wood case in cherry finish. Brass works with bell strike on the hour. 8'2" tall. Fine condition. Dealer comments: Joseph Moellinger of Neustadt in Germany sold 200 (or more) 30-hour clock movements to immigrants of Mennonite and Lutheran backgrounds. Many of these clocks arrived in Pennsylvania where some were given cases by local joiners and cabinet makers. Among these immigrants was Dr. Henry Melchior Muhlenberg who in 1741 settled in Germantown PA (now part of Philadelphia) and who later founded the American branch of the Lutheran church. The Moellinger movement in this elegant tall clock was given it's present case in the mid 19th century by a skilled Pennsylvania craftsman. It remains a wonderful example of the German influence that characterized much of Eastern Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries. Additional keywords: longcase, tallcase, grandfather
