Catalog Description: C.1827 Jacob Merrill, Plymouth rare center seconds banjo clock in original condition. Note this is the only standard size center seconds banjo known to exist. Although the throat tablet is cracked and the bottom door latch is absent, this clock is a wonderful piece of early Americana. This particular clock is pictured in Dworetsky Dickstein's Horology Americana, page 69. (Note the authors mis-spelled Merrill's name) The wonderfully complex T-bridge movement has a totally different layout to accommodate the center seconds, plus a 40 tooth escape wheel rather than the usual 30. The engraved signature on the movement reads: Made Jacob Merrill, Jr, Plym., June 24, 1827. Note the old hammered iron dial appears to be original however at some time in its life someone added some perimeter screws to help hold it down, and those holes are empty. Together with a copy of Horology Americana. Robert Cheney and Peter Sawyer are familiar with this rare clock. Height 30 inches |
