Catalog Description:

Cottage Shelf Clock c. 1885 Dimensions:13" tall by 8" wide. Maker/Mfgr./Author/Artist:BLACK FOREST CLOCKMAKER. Condition:Good-100 percent original including key. Runs well, although the brass movement could stand a cleaning. Circa:1885 Materials:Pine case with gold highlighting; brass movement; reverse painted lower door glass with colorful Ram and foliage. Description:All original-even down to the winding key; this half-octagon "bonus" or "premium", a colorful door glass including a strong Ram standing in mountain greenery. Also,it features an original painted (not paper)dial, original hands, original key and pendulum...and the case has not been stripped or changed at all. The paper label inside the case which is in a state of excellent preservation (only a few age "lines" on it) and which bears the following inscription on the first line: 'Manufactured in the Black Forest'. On the next line it says, 'THE BONUS TEA ASSOCIATION GIVEN WITH EIGHT POUNDS OF THEIR TEA'. Below that is a price listing that says 8d, 9d, 10d, 10 1/2d, and 11d per 1/4 lb packet.' (The small letter "d" beside each of the price amounts on the clock label stands for the old English letter designating a "Penny". The actual old English word which the "d" stood for was "denier" which derived from the earlier Roman word Denarius) On either side of the price list is the company logo or Trade Mark showing a lady holding a balance scale and around the perimeter the words- 'THE SEAL OF THE BONUS TEA COMPANY'. A few scrapes and chips on the case. The dial is painted on zinc and original and therefore a little grungy. The movement runs perfectly and keeps great time.
