Catalog Description: VERY RARE AND IMPORTANT ASA MUNGER STOVEPIPE SHELF CLOCK (Auburn, NY c. 1830) A beautiful grained mahogany case. Stovepipe metal pillars are beautifully painted and stenciled. The painting includes portraits of Henry Clay and Robert Fulton, with canal villages below. The tapered pillars are gold leafed and stenciled with compotes of fruit, florals, and multi-colored leaf decoration. The top of the stovepipe ends in carved wood capitals, above which are applied carved, circular rosettes. A scrolled, relief-carved crest has two squared pillars mounted with pineapples. The bottom mirrored door opens to reveal a crisp wallpaper background with flying eagle pendulum. The top door opens to a painted iron dial, and eight-day time-and-strike, weight-driven, brass movement with second bit hand. The clock retains a nice warm original patina. This is truly an outstanding example of an Asa Munger Stovepipe. Provenance: Walter Keller, Scarsdale, NY; Ed Landis, Newburgh, NY; Stuart Fisher, Silver Springs, MD. Height: 39 1/2 inches, Width: 19 1/2 inches Provenance: ex Collection of Peter Zaharis, Ithaca, NY |
