Catalog Description: A MOST IMPORTANT ASA MUNGER STOVEPIPE MONUMENTAL SHELF CLOCK (Auburn, NY c. 1830) One of a kind. This is a masterfully carved mahogany case which starts with detailed, carved paw feet, front and back, and continues with a leaf carved border on the base. Two stovepipe metal columns, slightly tapered at the top, are intricately and expertly painted and stenciled. At the bottom of the columns are two hand painted scenes of fisherman on shore, with a clipper ship and buildings in the distance. Stenciling continues with lyre, American eagle, and multi-colored floral and thistle decoration. On top of the stovepipes are carved capitals, underneath a deeply carved rosette. A deep relief carved molding separates the top crest, which is lavishly carved with double cornucopias and fruit, encompassed by two turned columns, which are mounted with half globes in gilt faux decoration. The bottomdoor is bowed, and made of figured mahogany, which opens to reveal a pristine wallpaper background and flying eagle pendulum, which is Asa Mungerpis trademark. The top door also opens to reveal the clockspis painted iron dial and movement. Itpis an eight-day, time-and-strike, brass weight-driven movement with second bit hand. It is in original finish, and magnificent condition.
