Antique Silas Hoadley Clock Price Type: auction |
|
Catalog Description: Silas Hoadley tall clock, ca 1813-1820. Walnut case, 87 inches high or 7 feet, 3 inches, a good size for most homes. Case has tapered edges on the sides, broken arch top with a brass eagle on top of an old brass top ornament. The case is generally very good. The previous owner preferred the case in an unfinished "country" look. We debated putting some stain and polish on the case, but felt the next owner should make that decision. 30 hour wood movement, strikes hours on a large iron bell on top of the case. Wood dial is very nice with seconds and calendar subsidiary dials. Old pewter hands. Dial signed "S. Hoadley Plymouth". The pendulum bob is old, weights are tin can replacements. The nice old movement has ivory bushings that Hoadley was noted for. This movement and similar clocks made by Hoadley are pictured in Palmer's, "The Book of American Clocks", Illustrations 63-65, and "Eli Terry and the Connecticut Shelf Clock", Second Edition Revised, by Kenneth D. Roberts and Snowden Taylor, pages 37 thru 43. This rare old clock came to us along with the collection of rare pillar and scroll clocks in thiscatalog. |
