Catalog Description:

Rare Seth Thomas "Off Center" pillar and scroll using the Seth Thomas movement patented by Eli Terry and licensed to Seth Thomas by agreement in 1818. Note the backboard of this movement is part of the backboard of the case. Production of the "Off Center" pillar and scroll clocks continued until 1822. Mahogany veneer case, 29 1/2 inches high, with one small piece of maple on top. Close inspection may find a small veneer chip, and repaired ears. Delicate turned columns. 30 hour wood, strap movement, count wheel strike, running. There are period weights with weight added to the time side, period pendulum, original putty around the top glass which has a break in lower left corner. Bottom glass is probably a replacement, although a very good copy of the originals. Very nice, full width label. Excellent wood dial, correct period hands, brass finials. Back feet evidently broken and expertly repaired. Good key escutcheon. Overall an excellent early clock now almost 180 years old. Refer to "Eli Terry and the Connecticut Shelf Clock", Second Edition Revised, by Kenneth D. Roberts and Snowden Taylor, Chapter 3.
