Catalog Description: Atkins, Whiting & Co.12 inch shelf clock, ca 1850. "Atkins, Whiting & Co., Bristol, Ct. USA", per the full label inside this beautiful 12 inch shelf clock, ca 1850. Case of rosewood veneer. 30 hour lyre movement, strikes a gong and running. The label also says, "Extra Thirty Hour Rolling Pinion, Rolling Verge Brass Clocks". In the book "The Contributions of Joseph Ives to Connecticut Clock Technology, 1810-1862", by Kenneth D. Roberts, he says "In so far as is know, the only clocks, other than a few possible experimental models, manufactured by the Atkins, Whiting & Co., during the 5 years of operation were thirty day timepieces. Two basic styles of cases were used by the firm-for these timepieces. One was an octagon wall clock while the other was a shelf or mantle clock". This clock is 30 hour, so possibly was an experimental model. Now has a paper dial on the old zinc pan. This is a keeper and if not mint, it is near mint. |
