Antique Seth Thomas Clock Price Type: auction |
|
Catalog Description: Rare Seth Thomas "Off Center Pillar & Scroll" clock. 30 hour, strap wood movement, count wheel strike, and is running. The back of the movement is the backboard of the case. This clock is almost identical to clock No.3 in our January 2002 auction that had a large number of bidders and sold for $4160. Patented by Eli Terry and licensed to Seth Thomas by agreement in 1818. These clocks were only produced 4 years, until 1822. Strikes on a large iron bell. The mahogany veneer case is 29 1/2 inches high and has pieces of maple trim at the top. Weights, bob, and dial, are period and more than likely original to this clock. The bottom glass has been professionally repainted. The full label is very good and has been sprayed with shellac to hold it to the backboard. Great 180 year old wood dial, correct period hands, brass finials are solid and good copies of the originals. There is an ivory escutcheon but the door lock is missing. Ears have been broken and repaired, the feet are good replacements. Nice full turned columns. Overall the clock is excellent with some casework properly done. You would expect some repairs to such a fragile case. In very good, original condition this clock should bring $5000 or more; but with the repairs and problems outlined we would estimate it will bring as much or more than the one in our last auction. Reference-Chapter 3 of the book, "Eli Terry and the Connecticut Shelf Clock", Second Edition Revised, by Kenneth D. Roberts and Snowden Taylor. |
