Catalog Description: Birge, Mallory & Co. column and splat clock, ca 1837-1843. "Birge, Mallory & Co. Bristol, Conn", ca 1837-1843. This company primarily made 8 day strap brass movement clocks, weight driven, during this period. The bell has been replaced with a later gong. The label is worn in the weight chutes and the center section is now protected with plastic. The top 2 glasses have the original putty, bottom is a replacement. The pendulum is old and a little bigger than we normally see on this style clock. Weights are period. The 36 inch case is a question mark. Excellent carved crest, full turned columns with gold capitals and bases. 2 key locks with brass escutcheons, not used in a long time-all there, but no key. The case has never been cleaned, has very little veneer repair, great old wood dial. Some brass trim added to the case. Looks old enough to be original. It looks a little like some of C. Jerome's clocks with the added features he used to market his clocks. There are 2 small brass eagles and several brass heads on the bottom section. This case and movement are identical to one shown on pages 263- 266 in the book by Kenneth D. Roberts, "The Contributions of Joseph Ives to Connecticut Clock Technology, 1810-1862". |
