Brewster and Ingraham

Catalog Description:

Brewster & Ingrahams beehive gothic shelf clock "Repeating Brass Clocks Manufactured by Brewster & Ingrahams, Bristol, Conn, USA". Label and movement signed the same. 19 inch mahogany veneer case. Dial is made of a very thin wood. Unusual, never seen one like it. The movement is 8 day strike, with Kirk patent cast iron spring retainers and rack striking system. Kirk had an iron backplate but B & I substituted a brass back plate but still used cast iron caps to hold the springs. This is considered very rare. Probably only used iron caps 1 year (1845) as they were discarded for brass plates in 1846. A complete discussion and pictures of this rare clock can be found in pages 243-249 of Ken Roberts book, "The Contribution of Joseph Ives to Connecticut Clock Technology, 1810-1862", Revised Second Edition. Also see the book by Bill Ultsch and Doug Cowan, Handbook of Clocks Produced by Charles Kirk, Elisha C. Brewster, and Brewster & Ingrahams at Bristol. Connecticut, 1828-1852, pages 50-51.
