Antique Stephen Taber Clock Price Type: auction |
|
Catalog Description: C.1800, Stephen Taber, New Bedford, Mass, tall clock in generally good condition, but with restorations that need additional attention. The Roxbury style case has been completely refinished, finials and fret are new (of the proper type), foot board is incorrect, as it should have OG feet, and the brass stop fluting has been removed. The seatboard has been renewed. All these points aside, the movement is original to the case. The dial is in exceptional condition with only a couple of small flakes; signature intact; moon dial has been varnished over, but that could be restored. Second hand is absent. The sister to this clock can be seen in two reference books: "The Clock Book" by Wallace Nutting [photo No.1], and in Palmer's "Book of American Clocks", figure No.85. Stephen only made clocks for 4 or 5 years, and this case is virtually identical to the clock referenced here. With proper feet and the stop fluting restored, as well as a proper finish on the case, it would stand quite proud. Height 96.25" $8,000-$12,000 |
