Catalog Description: C.1905, Tobey and Waltham, 3-Tr, 9-Tube, chiming tall clock in excellent original condition. Tobey manufactured furniture in the Chicago area from 1856 to 1954. Contrary to other histories, they were not simply sales agents, but manufacturers of fine and trendy furniture in the upscale Illinois market. They produced furniture for the Grand Pacific Hotel, Sherman House and Tremont House. Their clocks were produced as accessories to complement their furniture lines, and they purchased movements from Elliott, Waltham and others to install in their cases. This impressive broken arch case is veneered in the finest crotch mahogany, with all edges framed in dark tiger maple. The case retains original finish, with mild crazing. Heavy beveled glass in both doors. The movement and tubes with Waltham trademarks, and the dial with prominent 5 point star, top center, plus engraved at bottom "TOBEY CHICAGO". The Waltham movement is considered the "Packard" of 9-tube movements. Height 97" $7,500-$20,000 |
