James MacGregor

Catalog Description:

SCOTTISH MAHOGANY LONGCASE, circa 1825-36; Maker: James MacGregor Origin: Edinburgh The case of the James MacGregor clock is typical Edinburgh style of exceptional quality and in well preserved condition. It is in the overall English style, meaning the east of Scotland copying the English manner. It is distinctively scottish having the raised panels beneath the swans-necks. The plynth has the same raised mouldings. There are reeded pillars to the hood and reeded quarter columns to trunk of case. Beautiful flame mahogany makes this eight day longcase very attractive. The dial is exceptional and interesting. The arch scene is "Patie and Peggy" from "The Gentle Shepherd" by the Scottish poet Allan Ramsay. The four seasons corners are painted in strong colors. Matching brass hands, point out the minutes, hours, seconds and calendar dates. The dotted seconds circle donates an early dial of this period. The eight day brass movement is cleaned and runs well. It strikes the full hour on a cast bell. Height: 84 inches (214cm) Width at hood: 20 inches (51cm) Depth at base: 8.25 inches (21cm)
