Catalog Description: ENGLISH TALLCASE Circa 1750-60 Maker: JOHN STOKES Origin: ST. IVES, ENGLAND Circa 1750 This eight day tallcase is of solid oak. The carving in the trunk represents the "tree of life" rising from an urn. Also the english "tudor rose" is carved several times, and many leaves are carved in the arch of the break arch hood. Two pillars are at front of the hood and quarter columns at back, each having top and bottom capitols. Hood sides have rectangular windows. The makers name is engraved in the silvered boss of the dial and numbered 621. There are dolphin spandrels and early urn corner spandrels on the silver and brass dial. Note the early calendar aperature , also seconds dial. The brass movement is cleaned and runs well, striking on a bell. A tallcase having exceptional carving as well as being in very good condition.
