Antique Seth Thomas Clock Price Type: auction |
|
Catalog Description: Seth Thomas, Plymouth, Connecticut, ca 1819. The case is a column and splat, transition style. 30 hour, wood movement, strikes an iron bell. Running very well. Weights, pendulum, and hands, are all period. The old wood dial was beautifully repainted by an excellent dial painter. There is a full label except for some loss in the weight chutes. Glasses and putty are original. The bottom was backed with a cream paint. I am in a quandary to say how much of the painting is original underneath that rebacking.29 1/2 inch mahogany veneer case is very solid, no veneer damage, even around the door. The claw feet look great but on close examination you will see 2 toenails clipped. The stenciling on the half columns and splat is so bright and nice you would think they were redone or replaced, but I really believe they are original. Read, "Eli Terry & the Connecticut Shelf Clock", by Kenneth D. Roberts & Snowden Taylor. Picture of similar clocks, labels, and movements are on pages 136-150. |
