Catalog Description: Birge, Mallory & Co. Bristol, Co., column and splat clock, ca 1837-1843. The old 8 day strap brass movement is signed "B.M.&Co.". It strikes an original coil gong and is running properly.Mahogany veneer case is 36 inches, has good carved eagle, full turned columns, great graining. One place skinned and stained. The chimneys and returns are new and the eagle is not original to this case. The label is worn in the weight chutes, about 98% remains in the middle. Top glass is original, 2 bottom glasses are pitiful. Oriental scenes pasted on the glass then the glasses and putty spray painted gray. The veneer is not too bad, some patches on the doors and a few places needing to be patched. Top door lock has no escutcheon or key, bottom is fine.Good wood dial has no cracks but is missing the mirror that should be in the viewing hole. Weights and pendulum are of the 1835 period. For comparison purposes refer to "The Contributions of Joseph Ives to Connecticut Clock Technology, 1810-1862", by Kenneth D. Roberts, Revised Second Edition, pages 263, 264, 266. We sold a very similar clock in our July 2002 auction for $625. |
