Catalog Description:

French black marble clock, large and heavy; Movement is signed by "Etienne French marble clock, large and heavy. Roman figures on 3 sides, metal back. Bronze feet and figures covered with black paint. Case is 19 1/2 inches wide, 10 1/2 inches high. Movement is 8 day, running, strikes. Movement is signed by "Etienne (the maker) Paris Brevete (Patent) Maxant". Bronze bezel, beveled glass, unusual dial cover. The one piece porcelain dial is signed, "Shreve Crump & Co. Boston". The nickel winding keys pull out from the dial surround and are stamped, "United States Patented 1879". I researched for "unusual winding mechanisms" and found that this could have been patented by the Harvard Clock Co. which was prior to Boston Clock Co.'s unusual winding systems, or a French patent in the US". This will be a very valuable clock once the bronze is cleaned and polished.
