Catalog Description: Welch, Spring & Co. calendar shelf clock, probably the "Italian No. 3" model, ca 1868-1870 Welch, Spring, & Co. Forrestville, CT, on the full backboard label. This is probably the "Italian No.3" model, ca 1868-1870 that was originally sold by B.B.Lewis Clock Co.. When he went to work for Welch Spring these clocks went with him and were added to the Welch line, using a Welch label. The label on the B.B.Lewis "V", perpetual calendar mechanism, reads, "Bristol, CT USA", not "Forrestville, Conn, USA" and was supplied to Welch Spring by B.B.Lewis, or were already on the movements when he went to work there. The black and gold label is complete. This mahogany veneer case with gilt columns, is 20 inches high. The veneer is very good except for 2 or 3 edge chips on the bottom. The original bottom dial is enclosed in glass, and very white. Top dial is yellowed and has some stains. The bezels are grained to match the case veneer. Movement is 8 day, gong strike, and just keeps on running. Ly-Calendar, page 349. Millers "Calendar Clocks", No.186. |
