Southern Calendar Clock Company Fashion No. 4

Catalog Description:

Southern Calendar Clock Co., St. Louis, Mo., "Fashion No.4", ca 1880. Southern Calendar Clock Co., St. Louis, Mo., "Fashion No.4", ca 1880. This was the last of the short pendulum Fashion's. The only difference from the No.3 is the seconds dial is slightly recessed, where the No.3 is flush with the time dial, and the No.3 pendulum had a star on it. Inscriptions on the dials are also slightly different. 32 inch solid walnut case is 32 inches high, and 16 inches wide. It has been cleaned but not refinished in the pure sense. Still some grime in the crevices. Finials are original, that is unusual. That means the clock is 100% original. The No. 4 has a secret compartment in the back-base. I have never found anything in one of them, but I am always nosy and look. I keep hoping I will find gold coins, or a diamond ring.Dials are 7 1/2 inches, original zinc, also unusual, most have been repainted by now. These are beginning to lose paint but I wouldn't repaint them just yet. 8 day movement, strikes a large brass bell on the hours. Full black label inside to right of the bell. Movement is running very well. Seth Thomas Clock Co. made the time and calendar movements. They are made so large and heavy, that you rarely have to do more than oil them to get good running. Ly-Calendar, page 286. Millers "Calendar Clocks", page 110.
