Catalog Description: Prentiss Clock Improvement Co. gallery clock, ca 1891. This is an unusual clock being, 60 day, time only, pendulum movement. 14 inch metal dial, measuring within the chapter rings, 16 inches to the edge. These large galleries, without calendars, were made for large offices, banks, stores, and hotels. The Prentiss 60 day movement was touted as being the best clock movement of its kind ever produced in this country. The large oak case is 17 1/2 inches in front, 23 1/2 inches in the back. Some talented, or demented, woodworker added the back 1/3 of the case, using the old backboard and other parts. My panel of advisors, anyone who would examine the case, can't figure why he went to this trouble. The case is now 8 inches deep, should be only 5 inches. We cannot see that any purpose was served adding the 3 inches to the back. Anyway it is a nice large gallery. The front bezel is hinged on top. The movement is marked "SN2897", "Model 812", and "Pat'd Dec 10th 1889", on top of the front plate. There is a metal plaque on the base of the case that reads, "T.H.E.S.E. 291". Could that mean it was manufactured Feb. 1891? |
