Paul Rogers

Catalog Description:

Maine Shelf Clock, ca 1810, attributed to Paul Rogers of Berwich, Maine, and made in the style of the more expensive Massachusetts shelf clocks of that period. This is a country version of an early shelf clock, in a solid pine case, 29 1/2 inches, with a nice mellow honey color. In the recent book by the Spittlers and Chris Bailey, Paul Rogers is listed as being born in 1752 and died in 1818, with the information that he made tall clocks with iron plates, brass bushings, brass gears, and white iron dials; and further that he made "Massachusetts" shelf clocks. This shelf clock has iron plates, brass gears, in a good running weight driven movement. Time only, 30 hour movement, has a passing (fall off) strike, once on each hour. The weight is old, if not original, retains the original wooden pulley, original iron pendulum rod and old pendulum bob. The movement, repainted iron dial, and case, are all original to each other. The bonnet slips off the case in the manner of a tall case clock.NAWCC Bulletin Supplement No.17, by J. Katra, in 1989, is about the clockmakers of Southern Maine, and has more information about Paul Rogers. The previous owner of this shelf clock, also had a tall case clock that is pictured in the Bulletin Supplement No.17, which had the same characteristics as this shelf clock, and was attributed to Paul Rogers by Mr. Katra in the Bulletin Supplement No.17 article.
