George B Owens

Catalog Description:

George B. Owen shelf clock, Ca 1875. He was the General Manager of the Gilbert Clock Co. and had his own clock business in his garage. Moonlighting as we say today. I will say this for the old boy, I have never found evidence where he pilfered his employers stock and made clocks out of their material. I have checked the Gilbert books every time I research an Owen clock, and they are never close, similar sometimes, but he never copied their bases, tops, glasses, or anything. He was a prolific designer and patented many casesof his own while designing for Gilbert. This is a walnut case, 21" high witha little Christmas tree on top. Etched in places, but a simple slimline case.8 day movement signed by "Geo. B. Owen, Winsted, Conn." Strikesa bright brass bell that screws on the post, yes threaded, and then the nutis screwed on. Nickel bezel and dial ring, very nice one jar pendulum, andclock running strong. The only thing not original is a new paper dial, installedon the old zinc pan.
