Catalog Description: Luman Watson, Cincinnati, Ohio, ca 1820's. Column and Splat case is missing most of the finish, including stenciling on the columns, if there ever was any. Full label, good wood dial with an abundance of gold. 30 hour wood movement strikes an iron bell, running very good. Movement is held in place by mounting blocks. The top glass has the original putty, bottom mirror not original. Mahogany veneer case is 35" high and near perfect except for the finish. This clock is almost identical to those being made in Connecticut at the same time by Jerome and other makers. Your research will tell you thatseveral Connecticut clock apprentices and workers went downriver to Cincinnatito work for Watson for a short time, bringing the Jerome techniques withthem. This will be a great early clock with a few minutes with a rag andsome mahogany stain. Reference: "Eli Terry and The Connecticut Clockmakers, Second Edition Revised", by Kenneth D. Roberts and Snowden Taylor, pages 200-201. |
