Catalog Description: Grand Sonnerie Vienna Regulator, sometime referred to as a "blindmans clock", ca 1860-1875. I prefer to call it an insomniac's clock becauseI hear them striking all during the night and I know just what time it is.Strikes quarter hours on one coil gong, hours on a second gong. It playsfour notes on the first quarter, 8 notes on the half hours, etc. After eachquarter it will also strike the hour just past on the second gong. Unsigned3 weight movement is clean and running and striking as intended. This isa wood shelf mount clock, meaning it is earlier than other types. The movementhas a one piece dead beat anchor, nice early hands, pendulum bob and stick.Old 2 piece porcelain dial may have some faint hair lines but for sure theyare insignificant. The 49 inch walnut case is also unusual or different.Top and base are firmly attached and evidence indicates they always were.No doubt it has been reglued or something over the last 140 years. There are intricate carvings top to bottom and burl walnut used in places. There are half columns on the door with carved capitals and bases. I thinkthe backboard is one of the more distinguishing features of this case. Thereis dark wood inlay in a light wood recessed section. I have never seen inlayused like thin in a Vienna before. All three glasses are good. This is avery nice and well decorated clock for this low minimum. |
