Catalog Description: Southern Calendar Clock Co., "Fashion No. 4", ca around 1880. Seth Thomas produced the clocks using their best time movements, their Andrews's calendar mechanisms, and clock cases with features specified by the Culver brothers of St. Louis, Mo. who marketed the clocks under the Southern Calendar Clock Co. name. They advertised the fact that Fashion clocks would run at least 100 years. They missed it a little; this one is running after 125 years. Each of the Fashions was slightly different. This No. 4 was the last model using the short pendulum. It varied slightly from the No. 3 in that thependulum and seconds bit were different. Fashion dials, like most Seth Thomasdials, did not hold their paint well. Most by this time have been repainted. As you can see in the picture the time dial has a 5 to 10 percent paint loss, whilethe calendar dial has even less. I definitely wouldn't repaint them, butI know some of you would. Walnut case is 32 inches high and retains the originalfinish, now dark and crusty. Suits me as it is. All three finials are correctreplacements. As usual I found nothing in the secret compartment. 8day movement is running nicely, strikes a large brass bell on the hours.
