Catalog Description:

English Dial Clock, ca 1850's. This style clock was developed in England in the late 1700's and replaced the Tavern and Act of Parliament clocks that were traditional there for many years. This clock became a schoolroom or officeclock, replacing clocks that were a little more expensive to produce. Tallclocks were being made by everybody in England and this is a takeoff on thetall clock. The bonnet comes off like a grandfather bonnet, painted irondial like the tall clock, long pendulum, large weight, and of course thefairly long 41 inch burl mahogany case similar to tall clocks of that time.The bezel is hinged at the top and has an inside latch at the bottom. The12 inch painted iron dial is in exceptional condition. Dial is signed "Charleston"and has the minute numbers on the quarters outside the time track. We believethe fancy hands to be original. The 8 day, time only brass movement is seatboard mounted. The pendulum rod may be original but the bob is not. The hood, bezel, and inner dial faceplate show evidence of repairs, but well done.The lower front door is key locking and the key is in place. The case haslightwood inlay on the front sides and bottom. The lower door is bowed slightly, as intended. The top of the case behind the bezel is peaked. This is certainlya good early wall clock, well made, and should provide good service for another200 years.
