Charles Jacques

Catalog Description:

Charles Jacques Chiming Clock, ca 1922. He patented and made a number of tall clock movements with special chimes. His clock movements ranged from chimes on 5 to 13 tubes, and played choices of many chimes. This movement with 9 tubes plays, Westminster, Whittington, and Oxford (Notre Dame)chimes. The more tubes of course the more tunes could be played. Borgfeldt and Co. of New York was apparently an exclusive agent for Jacques' patent chiming clocks in the US. This Hall Clock is a domestic made case 81.5" high, 25.5" wide, made of solid mahogany and the finest of workmanship. It has beenbeautifully maintained and is in almost perfect condition. It has large frontfeet and large columns in front that are called tre-foil columns; I wouldprobably call them fluted. Full length side doors with glass that allows accessto the tubes and movement. The dial is their "Moon Arch Dial 238", fittedto their movement which is a strong, substantially built standard movementof good quality and finish. The dial is the finest hand pierced dial, engravedhour circle, corner switches, raised gilt beveled numerals, hand paintedmoon wheel. Papers and clock shop stickers indicate the clock was overhauledMay 1954. Reference: Ly-Longcase Clocks and Standing Regulators, pages 45-58.This clock is No. 123 in that section.
