Catalog Description: L. F. and W. W. Carter, Bristol, Conn. "Round Drop Wall Clock", ca 1863-1868. The Carter brothers were in a partnership with Elias Burwell from 1859-1861. Burwell owned the rights to the B. B. Lewis patent calendar mechanism, and continued to supply the movements to the Carter's when they opened their own shop. They made and sold both wall and shelf calendar clocks. Their series of Round Drop Wall clocks ranged in size from 26" to 57". Miller's book on "Calendar Clocks", page 63, says that the 57" clock "was not made with day of week gear or indicator in top dial". This clock is completely original and it does have the indicator on the top dial. My "experts" tell me that the 57" case was the only one with a clear bottom glass and a designed flocked paper on the backboard, and only a handful of this model is known to exist today. The clock has the Welch 8 day, upside-down, 2 weight movement. The movements have been serviced and are in good operating condition. The B. B. Lewis calendar mechanism is working properly and has a good label. Thependulum bob and stick retain the original gilt, and the matched pair ofweights is correct. Millers "Calendar Clocks", pages 62-63, pictures the clockand movement. Ly-Calendar has information on Elias Burwell, L.F. and W.W.Carter, and Welch, Spring and Co. that supplied the upside-down movements. |
