Curtis and Clark

Catalog Description:

"Curtis and Clark, Plymouth, Conn." extremely rare miniature shelf clock, ca 1824. Heman Clark is believed to have designed this 8 day brass movement using coil springs imported from Geneva (per the label) or another European country, as the technology to make brass springs had not yet been developed in the US. Mahogany case is 22" high and 12" wide, empire style case with decorative brass strip inlay around the topmost portion of the contoured empire top. There is also 2 brass strip inlays in each column. Ivory escutcheon and carved paw feet. The case is in excellent condition, but refinished. The inside of case top is numbered in ink, "69" and corresponding to ongoing study of these extremely rare clocks, there are 18 know examples, including this one. It could also have been numbered on the seatboard, but it is a replacement in this clock. 8 day brass, time and strike, solid brass plate movement with springs, most commonly thought to be the first Americanspring driven clock. Movement is in good shape and running. Wonderful, originallabel inside. Both glasses replaced with old glass, the lower with a correctrestoration painting. Replaced cut steel hands and seconds bit. Originalpainted iron dial with second's circle, signature strengthened. References:"Horology Americana", page 132; and, "Eli Terry and the Connecticut ShelfClock", by Roberts and Taylor, pages 120-122.
