Austria Wall

Catalog Description:

C.1820, Austrian, Laterndluhr, 3-weight, Grand Sonnerie in good original condition. This is a nice example of the earliest Biedermeier style. A very similar clock may be seen in Fred. Kaltenbandouml;ck's book Viennese Timepieces, page 184, figure 398. It has had some restoration: the rear of the case has 2 large and 2 small old iron bands that are securing a vertical split in the case (note the mahogany veneer is cracked, but not separated on the front, but would have failed without these reinforcements). Corbels have been reglued. There is some repair, here and there to the satinwood banding. The case has been rubbed to a sheen. The 3-weight Grand Sonnerie movement is seat board mounted, and with a separate brass standard for the 2 coiled wire gongs. The one piece porcelain dial has a chip at the left winding hole; other minor imperfections. The pulleys are 4 spoke, star shaped (very nice). The pendulum is original, with steel rod, and brass front and rear of bob. The movement is clean and functional. See also lot No. 457. Height 44 inches
