Catalog Description: C.1860, French Quarter Striking Lantern clock, in the Normandy style of 1790, with restoration. This is an interesting clock, primitive in concept and operation, and still very robust with the potential to last another few hundred years. The 3 rope drive trains are front to back rather than side by side, the time wheels behind the dial followed by the hour strike in the center, and at the rear, the quarter strike train. The qtr hour is struck on 2 bells (ding dong). The hour follows on a still larger bell, only after the 4 quarters are sounded at the top of the hour. The anchor with recoil escapement is original to the movement, and helps us date it mid 19th century. The dial has been painted on a pottery plate, drilled in the center, and certainly looks the part. The wall bracket is home made, but substantial in every way and more than strong enough to hold 40 pounds of clock and weights. (weights recent) Dial 9", clock itself 18", bracket 28 inches |
