M Bentwe

Catalog Description:

C.1750, Austrian, M. Bentwe, in Wien, quarter strike, crown verge bracket clock, with restorations. Originally this 3-train clock struck quarters, plus had an English style pull quarter repeat, and those parts are absent. It now strikes and repeats on 2 bells, a high tone heard on the quarters only and on the hour, 4 high tones, followed by the hour on a deeper bell. The movement runs for 56 hours (2 days), and has fusees on the time and quarter train, and a standing barrel on the hour train. The case has met with significant restoration; the front door and base appear to be recent. Although there is now a red mahogany finish on the case, it would certainly been ebonized originally. The dial itself is magnificent, well engraved, with unusual north-wind spandrels, mock pendulum aperture, calendar aperture above 6, moon phase in the arch, plus levers for strike/no strike and repeat/no repeat on either side. The hands are nicely pierced with fine detail. A lot of antiquity for the money. Height 20 inches
