A type of case designed to sit on a shelf, table or mantel, as opposite to a longcase clock or a wall clock.

Ship's Clock; Marine Chronometer (Shelf, Wall)

May refer to a clock that strikes on the ship's bell system. May also refer to a boxed clock set in gimbals for use aboard a ship to determine longitude.

Skeleton Clock (Shelf)

A clock form refined in the late 18th and early 19th century that emphasized the movement as a decorative object in itself. The plates were made as narrow as possible, and cut out, so that the movement could be easily seen. The surfaces were highly finished, and the clock was usually protected by a glass dome.
