Elias Ingraham (1805–1885) was born in Marlborough, Connecticut and trained as a cabinetmaker before moving to Bristol in 1828 to design clock cases for established clockmaker George Mitchell. Ingraham proved to be an exceptionally talented case designer, creating the influential “Sharp Gothic” or steeple case style that became one of the most widely copied clock case designs in America.
After years of partnerships, including Brewster & Ingrahams and E. & A. Ingraham, Elias founded Elias Ingraham & Company in 1857, the forerunner of the E. Ingraham Company, which remained under family control in Bristol, Connecticut for well over a century. Between 1857 and 1873 Ingraham was granted seventeen patents for clock case designs, including the popular Doric, Ionic, and Venetian styles, and the company later became known for ornate black-enameled mantel clocks before eventually being sold in 1967.
