Elisha Niles Welch (1809–1887) began making wooden-movement shelf clocks in Forestville, Connecticut in 1831, eventually consolidating several struggling local clock businesses, including those of J. C. Brown, after taking them over in the 1850s. In 1864 he organized the E. N. Welch Manufacturing Company as a joint-stock corporation devoted to producing clocks and clock cases.
Welch clocks became known for elegant rosewood and later walnut cases, with a higher-grade line produced through the related Welch, Spring & Company between 1868 and 1884. After Elisha Welch’s death in 1887 the company struggled financially, eventually being reorganized in 1903 as the Sessions Clock Company, which continued operations on the same site for decades afterward.
