Florence Kroeber was born in Germany in 1840 and immigrated to the United States, settling in New York City where he worked as a bookkeeper for a clock retailer on Cortlandt Street. He took over the business in the early 1860s and gradually built it into a significant importer and dealer of French, German, and American clocks and novelties.
By the late 1880s Kroeber had incorporated as the F. Kroeber Clock Company, designing his own ornate clock cases, including patented designs resembling Victorian picture frames, while sourcing movements from Connecticut manufacturers. Kroeber clocks, often elaborate figural and novelty designs aimed at the higher end of the market, remain popular with collectors today.
