The American Cuckoo Clock Company began in Philadelphia in the mid-1890s, growing out of a retail clock-importing business run by Louis Breitinger and his partners. Rather than shipping fully assembled cuckoo clocks from Germany’s Black Forest, which often arrived damaged, the firm imported wood, parts, and skilled workers and assembled the clocks domestically. The company was formally incorporated in 1905 after Breitinger’s death, with leadership passing to his sons.
During the 1920s the company broadened its lineup beyond cuckoo clocks to include chiming, Westminster, alarm, and hall clocks marketed under the related American Chime Clock Company name. World War II cut off the supply of German parts and effectively ended cuckoo clock production, though the firm continued servicing and repairing clocks for some years afterward from its later Maspeth, New York location.
